How do I become an OHSAA Certified Track
& Cross Country Official?
Step
1: Determine if you want to take NEOTOA Track & Field
Class or take the test on your own through OHSAA.
Step 2: If taking the class offered by NEOTOA,
download the Class Application and follow the instruction listed
on the application
and follow steps 7 through 10.
Step 3: If taking the test on your own through
OHSAA, obtain an Officiating Application from the OHSAA and
follow steps 4 through 10. Contact Angie Itnyre (614-267-2502, ext. 110)
at the OHSAA office for an application form.
Step 4: Mail application form and fee
Mail completed application form, information sheet and required
$45.00 application fee to the OHSAA, Angie Itnyre, 4080 Roselea
Place, Columbus, OH, 43214.
Step 5: Receive officiating instruction books
in mail
You will receive your rule books, instruction sheet, testing
information, pocket calendar and OHSAA handbook for officials
within seven days. If you do not receive this material, contact
Angie Itnyre at the OHSAA office (614-267-2502, ext. 110)
Step 6: Prepare for Officiating Exam
Study your rule books in preparation for the open book exam
given by your local officiating association. Dates, times and
location of testing will be provided in your packet.
Step 7: Take Officiating Exam
The exam will be an open book format with a one hour time limit.
At the conclusion of the test, you will receive your results.
Applicants must receive a passing score of 75% in order to be
a licensed OHSAA official. Officiating certificates and patches
will be given to students with passing grades on test day. These
students may begin officiating the following day.
Step 8: Receive Officiating Permit
Applicants with a passing score will receive their officiating
permit in the mail within three weeks from their test date.
If you do not receive your permit within this time frame, contact
Angie Itnyre at the OHSAA office (614-267-2502, etx. 110).
Note: Applicants who do not pass the officiating exam must wait
one year to re-apply and start the application process over.
Step 9: Attend Required Rules Meetings
Officials are required to attend a minimum of four local rules
meetings and one state rules meeting every calendar school year
to maintain their officiating permit.
Step 10: Annual Renewal of Officiating Permit
Renew your officiating permit annually in the month of June.
